The Controller General of Nigeria Customs Service Alhaji Abdullahi Dikko Inde (OFR) has commended Federal Operations Unit, Zone ‘A’ Ikeja, Lagos for impounding 1,585 contraband goods valued N1,543,437,535.00 between January and June 2011 as against 930 seizures made within the same period last year at the value of N623, 194,014.00.
Speaking to thenigerianmaritimenews.com, the Acting Controller in charge of the Anti Smuggling Unit, Controller V.D. Dimka said his team’s outstanding success could only be achieved because of the immeasurable yet necessary logistic support it received from the Controller General. He opined that although it is within his Unit’s schedule to persistently stall the efforts of fraudulent people who try to circumvent the law by engaging in illegal imports through Nigeria ports and borders, much would not have been achieved if his team stood alone.
Dimka, obviously not deterred by unyielding smugglers revealed that his team has engaged more aggressive anti-smuggling measures and has maintained robust working relationships with government agencies like The Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps, The Nigerian Police, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), NAFDAC and The Nigerian Army as they aid his team’s operations.
“We have devised a strategy for 24hour monitoring and patrol of our ports and borders to ensure compliance by all stakeholders so as to ensure trade security and facilitation necessary to boost our economy.”
